The Giver by Lois Lowry

This is part of the 'My Favourite Book' series: authors, bloggers, and readers sharing their favourite book with my readers.  If you're interested in contributing one of your own - you can find out more information here.
I am an absolute sucker for all things dystopia... and I distinctly remember when I fell in love with that genre. I was sitting in a 7th grade English class and our assistant teacher had decided to read us a story.  It had been so long since anyone had read us a book, that there was an undeniable excitement in the air.

Eimear McBride on writing and publishing

I have had to abandon reading A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing because it's that fun final exam / essay period of my degree but I wanted to share this video.  The author, Eimear McBride is talking about the writing process behind her, now Baileys Prize nominated, novel which I thought may be of interest to any budding authors amongst you! Years of rejection, manuscript put away in the drawer, losing all hope....and then suddenly all of this success and recognition has come at once.  It's always nice, when you're plodding through wondering why you even bothered in the first place, to be reminded that success isn't always immediate.  Sometimes you have to spend a long time doubting yourself before you get the recognition you deserve.

Have you read A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing?  If so, what did you think?

Frida Kahlo to Marty McConnell

On my many wanders around the internet I have stumbled upon either this poem or quotes from it which have been wrongly attributed to Frida Kahlo.  It's since been blogged and reblogged through Tumblr with the wrong name attached. There's something heartbreaking in a poem about losing your identity to a lost-love losing its true poet along the way.
